What do Disciples of Christ Believe?
Like most Christians, Disciples affirm Jesus is the Son of the Living God and offers saving grace to all.
Two groups of frontier Christians came together in 1832 to form the foundation of today’s Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). They shared the view that no person should be excluded from fellowship because they did not adhere to a particular human-made creed as there is no creed but Christ. We study the Bible to deepen our faith and dialogue with one another to achieve understanding of the will of God.
Hilton Christian Church came into being on January 11, 1953, first meeting in the Hilton Village Women’s Club. The church moved to its present location in June, 1953, adding an Education building in 1957 and building the present day sanctuary in 1970. A recent addition added several new rooms, including a large youth activity room.
Hilton Christian Church exists because of our belief in God as revealed through Jesus Christ. The Bible is our guide for faith, each believer being led by God’s Spirit and dialogue with the community in interpretation of scripture. Baptism is a symbolic act of our belief and communion is open to all as an affirmation of our belief. The unity for which we strive is based upon the love of Jesus Christ and his mandate to love God and love neighbor.

Beliefs and PracticesOpen Communion: The Lord's Supper or Communion, is celebrated in weekly worship. It is open to all, regardless of their religious or church affiliation.
Valuing Diversity: Each person is free to determine individual beliefs guided by the Bible, the Holy Spirit, study and prayer. Baptism by Immersion: In baptism, the old self-centered life is set aside, and a new life of trust is God is made possible. Although Disciples generally practice baptism by immersion, all baptism traditions are honored. Importance of Church Unity: All Christians should cooperate in ministry where ever possible, affirming each other as sisters and brothers in Christ. Ministry of All Believers: Both ministers and lay persons lead worship, direct services opportunities and nurture spiritual growth. Freedom of Belief: Disciples are called together around one essential element of faith; belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. |
